Sandalwood was a common plant in the mid-19th century when the western businessmen discovered it and found that there was a huge demand for it in China. As a result, many of the natives were forced to harvest the forests for this precious tree which resulted in the neglect of their own taro lands. The islands became so famous for the trees in China that they became know as the Sandalwood Mountain or Tan Heong Shan.
